Biography
"The Hagelin equation: Not only is he a super-promising singer-songwriter, but hes also a gifted dancer who is currently a member of the Carolina Ballet." - Philip Van Fleck, Metro Magazine, November 2007.
Nick Hagelin does it all. Taking home first place in the North Carolina Songwriter's contest allowed him to build a recording studio in his home, and write, produce, and engineer his first full length album, "Nice To Be Here." A tremendously soulful testament to life and love, his music crosses genres seamlessly, with jazzy chord structures, r&b grooves, pop melodies and the soulful simplicity of a man and his acoustic guitar. His music has a universal appeal and accessibility that is unprecedented in modern pop and his lyrics are those of a young man who has lived a full and richly complex life.
Nick Hagelin was born a performer. Its in his blood. He was born in New York City to parents that were both professional musicians. His father had received his masters from Yale in choral conducting and organ - his mother was a professional singer and voice teacher. Before he was even born, Nick kicked his heart out to classrooms full of voice students singing for his pregnant mom. By age 15 he had danced on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House (twice, with the Kirov Ballet and then with American Ballet Theater), played opposite Kevin Kline in The Emperor's Club, been in national television commercials, and was featured on Law & Order: SVU working with Ice-T and Richard Belzer.
He was a busy kid - catapulted into the life of a New York actor at a very young age. Nick's talents were diverse and he overcommitted himself in the pursuit of these various artistic endeavors. His success caught up with him, and he was pulled in too many directions. By 18 he had had 9 orthopedic surgeries which lead to an addiction to prescription pain killers. He fell hard into the darkness of drug culture and barely made it out alive. With the support of his family he committed to his recovery his senior year in high school.
Nick Hagelin went into rehab, quit his rock band, booked out of his agency, and focused almost exclusively on ballet. The discipline of his classical training gave him a foundation to build a new life. Everyday was a half-day at school - before lunch he was on a bus to complete his training at School of American Ballet at Lincoln Center where he had been on scholarship since age 9. He showed up well that year, and grew to a professional caliber. In June of 2005, just before his graduation, Nick was offered a full time job as a dancer for Carolina Ballet. He moved to Raleigh later that summer, and created a momentous shift in his experience and perception and found the stillness and time to emerge as the musician and producer he is today.
As a singer/songwriter Nick hits the stage with the excitement and confidence of a seasoned professional with literally thousands of hours of performance experience under his belt. They say the difference between major artists and one hit wonders is their live show. Nick Hagelin is here to stay. His live game is raw and exciting with sharp and incredibly consistent performances. With a world-class band, his sets are an incredible high-energy fusion of original songs and Top-40 mash-ups - complete with complex live vocal arrangements, beat boxing, and freestyling.
Phillip van Vleck of Metro Magazine said "[Nick Hagelin's] guitar playing was sharp, his stage presence was a major buzz and his songs were way hip. His vibe put me in mind of Dave Matthews, and thats a potent vibe for a performer to conjure on stage."
Nick Hagelin's music is as timeless as it is diverse - he produces hip/hop, r&b, and pop/techno and has worked with some of the top artists in the industry and done music for fashion shows, video games, and film. His experience, perseverance, and freakish abundance of raw talent makes him a force to be reckoned with. In an industry that is undergoing great change, Nick's adaptability and diverse, universal appeal make him an incredible asset and rare commodity.
